Ready? Set...Action!

Madeline experienced her first movie in the theater yesterday. I say "experienced" because the volume was up so loud you felt like you were in the movie, not just watching it. We saw the VeggieTales, "Jonah", and enjoyed popcorn and Junior Mints. I confess I brought in my own juice boxes. Mason enjoyed watching about 30 minutes of the movie before nodding off; I couldn't believe he slept through all that noise! Anyway, it made me remember seeing my first movie in the theater (The Fox and the Hound). Madeline did much better than I did: no sobbing, no leaving the theater, no nightmares about howling pups and frantic foxes. I guess she's more mature than I was. Well, if you can remember what your first movie was, leave a comment and we'll reminisce together.

I'll show my age, but my "first" movie in a real theater was Fantasia. I still love that movie and go way back thru the years when I watch it. My father took my sisters (2 of them) and I. We didn't get anything to eat. We were just glad to be able to see a MOVIE in a "REAL" theater. It was the Alex in Glendale.

The first real movie I remember seeing was in a huge moving van with a huge screen in the front. Two rows of seats and a projector. They gave us a piece of bubble gum when we left the truck. I don't remember the name of the movie. They brought the truck to the vacant lot in the housing projects in San Diego. The first theater I remember attending was The Alamo in Holtville, CA. Three Stooges and a Lash LaRue serial.

Not only did the moving van come to the park/vacant lot but on the same weekends a flat-bed truck with a merry-go-round on the back would come, too. We always looked forward to the movies, especially the serials which would make us want to come back from week to week. As I recall we had to pay something like a nickel or dime to attend and or ride.

To Wanda, Gramma and Aunt Connie, I remember (and that word ("remember") carries with it recognition that only someone of my age group would appreciate, hee, hee) sitting in a friend's car watching a Drive-Thru screen and pretending we were inside the tall wall surrounding the movie event. We could not hear a thing because we were on the outside looking in! (I came from a Baptist minister's home and to slip inside the walls would have not been acceptable!) The pictures were fun to watch and we made up the story line from the car! It was called "creativity". What fun for Madeline to be in an air conditioned building, popcorn in hand and being there with someone she loves! Memories!

I vividly remember watching "The Rescuers" at Western Bible College in the chapel. The students had a movie night and we brought blankets and pillows and camped out on the floor to enjoy the movie. It was wonderful and that movies is still one of my old time favorite kid's movies. Now my girls enjoy watching it too!

Was it Muppets Take Manhattan? I remember something about Kermie and an electric chair. Scary! I definitely cried my eyes out at Fox and the Hound though. Couldn't even read the book without getting teary after seeing it.

Okay, my first movie was the original Mary Poppins in the Ossining theatre. I remember that our babysitter took us to see it. That's the same theatre in which I saw Herbie the Lovebug. My first drive in was the Swiss Family Robinson at the Starlight in Croton.
